Who Are We?
Forty years ago in 1965, Professor
Arthur Lim Siew Ming started a private practice
named Eye Clinic Singapura at Liat Towers,
Orchard Road, Singapore. What began as a
fledgling eye care practice at Liat Towers
grew quickly and Dr Khoo Chong Yew and Dr
Ang Beng Chong joined the clinic. The clinic
moved to its present location at Gleneagles
Hospital in 1994.
Professor Arthur Lim, Dr Khoo
Chong Yew and Dr Ang Beng Chong have to
a large extent been responsible for the
standard of eye care Singaporeans receive
today. They are passionate about ophthalmic
care, research and education available in
Asia and have played key roles in the development
of ophthalmology including the establishment
of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC);
Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI)
and the Departments of Ophthalmology at
the National University Hospital and National
University of Singapore. In addition, Professor
Lim and Dr Ang have helped set up 5 eye
centres in China, of which the Tianjin Medical
University Eye Centre won the 2002 top award
by the central government of China as a
model for scientific development and education.
Today, SNEC has become an
outstanding centre of excellence serving
Singaporeans, influencing service, education
and international activities throughout
Asia and beyond. Prof Lim also chaired SERI,
the research arm of SNEC, established in
1977 and now an internationally recognised
important ophthalmic research centre.
The National
Eye Centre started off on a drawing board
in 1988/89. Again, it was typical of Arthurs
generosity of spirit to give so much more
than what he was going to take out of the
system. So the result is now, in 2004, he
has, at the rate of being immodest, I think,
a great eye centre in Singapore, one which
allows us to go into the world and hold
our heads high as professionals, because
we have been well trained and well exposed

Furthermore, in 1990, the
largest medical congress was held in Singapore,
led by doctors of Eye Clinic Singapura with
Professor Lim as Congress President, Dr
Khoo Chong Yew as Congress Secretary-General
and Dr Ang Beng Chong as Chairman of the
Scientific Committee. 6000 delegates from
100 countries attended the highly successful
medical eye congress.
.no doubt the energy, the enthusiasm
and the imagination of one man lifted the
conference from yet another tired world
jamboree to a mission to spread the word
of the application of modern technological
ophthalmology to the underprivileged masses
of the world

Over the past 4 decades,
the Eye Clinic Singapura has expanded from
3 to 8 ophthalmologists and younger surgeons
like Dr Ronald Yeoh, Dr Adrian Koh, Dr Choo
Chai Teck, Dr Ong Sze Guan and Dr Steve
Seah have now come onboard. As the clinic
continues to expand and through conscientious
investments in new technology, we are poised
to become Eye Clinic Singapura International,
humbly serving Singaporeans and foreigners
and evolving into one of the largest private
eye care group practices in Southeast Asia.
