| One of the ways to correct
vision is through a procedure called LASIK
(Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis), which
uses a laser to change the curvature of the
cornea (outer window of the eye). LASIK removes
tissue within the cornea to treat low to high
level of nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism. It is a highly successful operation
with very low risk to patients who are suited
to the procedure.
Myopia or the Short-sighted Eye
Distant objects are focused in front of
the retina and are blurred on reaching the
retina. This is due to eye elongation. However,
near objects are focused clearly on the
retina. The higher the myopia, the nearer
must the object be to the eye to be clearly
seen.
LASIK is for those who
- Want to reduce or eliminate
their dependence on glasses or contact
lenses
- Are at least 18 years of
age
- Have had a stable eye prescription
for at least one year
- Have no significant eye
diseases such as cataract, glaucoma or
retinal diseases
The decision to have LASIK
is an important one that only you can make.
You need to consult an eye doctor for an
eye examination. You and your doctor will
determine if LASIK is an option for you.
If you are a suitable candidate for LASIK,
you will be given additional information
about the procedure that will allow you
to make an informed decision about whether
to proceed.
